I spend Dreaming season doing three main things.
Dreaming, of course.
And I’m also carrying firewood and reading beside the fire.
This week I’m re-reading a novel that I first encountered many years ago, The Fifth Sacred Thing by Starhawk.
Like many works of fiction, there are truths nestled within the story.
Written in 1993, some of the details of this story are chillingly prophetic, down to the year.
While other details feel like secret teachings, a balm to a mind curious for understanding, connection, and technique.
I loved reading this passage, especially during the Dreaming season:
“What does it mean to become a Dreamer?” Madrone asked…
“There is the world of physical form,” Lily said, “What we know and can touch. And there are the realms of the ch’i world, realms of energies and spirits that infuse and underlie the physical. The division between the worlds is never absolute. Always there is a bleed-through. So, a Dreamer stands on the boundary. Did you know the German world for Witch, Hexe, comes from haggibutze, she who sits on the hedge?…
In an ordinary dream, the spirit world speaks to us. But a Dreamer can speak back, can make shapes and patterns in that world that later take form in this….There are many ways to dream. Some do it at night, with their eyes closed, some open-eyed in the light of day. Some tell stories that become the dreams of many.”
This passage is a reminder that Dreaming is like that “zero” concept, where something can be both nothing and also add value (10 is different from 10,000, which is different from 0).
Dreaming season is not just for laying-around and snoozing.
There’s momentum here for actively allowing an aspect of your mind to contribute, steer, tonify, and converse with The Mystery.
As we begin to feel the daylight lengthen just a bit, and the footsteps of The Priestess archetype get closer, there’s time yet to engage your Dreaming mind.
Dream a future.
Dream of safety.
Dream solutions.
Dream on behalf of the many.
This is a birthright, yes.
But also, a responsibility.
There’s a part of your psyche designed to Dream, and another part designed to make those dreams come true.
Dream now, and give that other part of the psyche, The Queen — the manifester, the one who walks with us half-a-year from now, something to do when it’s her turn to take the Wheel.
Your ability to manifest, to sculpt and shape your reality, depends directly on your ability to Dream.
Allow the “wintering” aspects of this season like slowing down, resting more, and going to bed early, all that “nothing”, add value to your life and the lives of others if you spend it Dreaming.
You may say I’m a Dreamer
But I’m not the only one
— John Lennon
Not the only one by a long shot.
