Description
a note from Katie:
As a child of the 80’s, this almanac feels like the “mystical trapper keeper” I’ve been needing to keep me organized.
When I need to remind myself of a seasonal card or a vow, or what I was up to in a season that’s “across the wheel” or even last year, my almanac/s are the go-to, one-stop resource.
Plus, I’m recording new information in it each day, which keeps me present, attentive, and participatory in my life.
I can keep track of my own patterns and also create a record of when the wood thrush arrives, and the first bear sighting in the spring; when the canopy is in full leafy green for the summer, the first woodstove fire in the autumn, and the first snowfall of winter.
Thoreau famously kept track of things like this, too — born of curiosity and an intimacy with nature, his dedication to recording observations of nature has become a resource for modern day scientists tracking climate change.
This almanac is 10 years in the making.
In the early days of The Darkwood School, the participants and I yearned for a tidy journal just like this — helpful information about the moon phases, the holy days, and the Darkwood archetypes, and also plenty of space to record thoughts, ritual ideas, poetry, and drawings…all in one place.
Once I fill them out, my yearly almanacs are guides for my future self.
My Darkwood Almanacs help me predict and look forward to my own patterns, wielding and enjoying them instead of fighting against them or struggling in confusion.
I can also look forward to Nature and her seasons, anticipating birds and bears, prepared and ready for drops in temperatures, shade and sun, and angles of light.
One Darkwood participant commented, “The Almanac is like The Darkwood School applied. It’s all of this information in action”.
I agree.
