There are two ways to get deep.
One way is to sink toward it, lifeless and resigned; a one-way ticket.
Yuck.
And the other way is to dive toward it, strong and on purpose with every intention of bringing the nourishment, insight, and wisdom found there back up to the surface.
Yay!
At Autumn Equinox, we stand at a threshold — the light half of the year on one side, and the dark half on the other.
I like to think of this threshold like the surface of the ocean.
We can be up in the air and light, breathing. That’s what we’ve been doing since Spring Equinox.
And we can also duck under the surface, diving down toward the deep and dark, feeding (like a whale).
Hello Autumn Equinox and the Dark half of the year.
That’s where we are now.
Like a whale that’s been on the surface of the ocean breathing, migrating, and socializing, we’ve enjoyed ourselves. But now we’re hungry.
And our favorite food (the giant squid) is all the way at the bottom of the ocean.
Nothing at the surface will satisfy our appetite, nothing will offer nourishment like the food that’s way down deep.
So, here on the “surface”, this threshold between Light and Dark, we get to honor our hunger and dive to satisfy it.
And who better to initiate this depth-driven journey than The Mermaid archetype?
No matter the season, The Mermaid archetype helps you initiate depth.
And why would you want to initiate depth?
First of all, because it is a journey that needs “starting”.
The whale doesn’t just think “food” and suddenly she’s a mile below the surface with a squid in her belly.
No way.
She swims there, intentionally.
It takes time.
And it starts by leaving the surface and pointing herself toward it; the dive.
This is what The Mermaid archetype does for our psyche.
She points us toward our own depth and gets us diving toward it.
The Mermaid is the diver.
OK, but we aren’t whales on a diet of giant squid.
So why are we initiating depth?
What’s “deep” in us?
Well, there’s pain, but it’s also the only place we find the anodyne.
We trace down the root of our wounds, and there we find the remedies for them.
We find fear, but also the exact, exquisite comfort that allieviates it.
In the deep we find our wisdom, intuition, truth, and connection to the divine.
We find The Mystery.
At Autumn Equinox, we’re crossing the threshold toward all of this.
And The Mermaid archetype is our guide and companion.
Like the whale, we exist in two places — the surface and the deep.
We breath in one and feed in the other.
We need them both.
So when we look at the shape of the Mermaid, we see that human part and also that fish part.
Kind of like her moon, half light and half dark.
Kind of like her season, (mostly) equal days and nights.
We are reminded that we are both and we need both; a creature designed for multiple worlds.
You’ve been in one world a long time now — six months in the Light half, ever since Spring Equinox.
One part of you is good and satisfied, and maybe even tired. Definitely hungry.
So, it’s time to honor the other part of you.
The part that craves the deep.
It’s time to dive.
You know how, it’s your birthright to experience this cycle.
Call upon The Mermaid archetype, a beloved aspect of your wisdom, to help you want to.
love and diving,
